Smart home sounds like a big project, but it can easily be built up in small steps. From customer conversations, we know most of the uncertainty doesn’t come from the devices themselves, but from the many competing standards and jargon surrounding them.
Where to start (and where not to)
The most sensible entry point is devices that solve one specific problem: a plug that switches a string of lights on a schedule, or a camera for the front door. Anyone who starts straight off with a fully networked lighting system usually spends significantly more money before it’s even clear whether their actual usage needs it.
Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Matter: the key terms briefly explained
- Wi-Fi devices connect directly to your home network — the simplest setup, but each device occupies its own Wi-Fi connection and usually depends on the manufacturer’s cloud.
- Zigbee is a separate radio protocol with lower power consumption, but it needs an additional hub or bridge.
- Matter is a newer, cross-manufacturer standard meant to bring devices from different brands together in one system — device selection is growing, but still isn’t as large as Wi-Fi or Zigbee.
For a first step in, pure Wi-Fi devices are usually the most pragmatic choice: no extra hub, no compatibility questions, works with Alexa or Google Assistant.
Common beginner mistakes
The most common mistake is buying devices from different brands without first checking whether they can be controlled through one shared app. The second most common: expecting a smart camera to store unlimited footage with no subscription at all — most models need a cloud storage plan for a longer recording history.
Our recommendations
For getting started, we recommend a Wi-Fi plug to try out the basic functions, plus an indoor camera with local storage for anyone who wants to avoid a subscription at first.
