Few product categories advertise as many numbers as Bluetooth headphones: decibel figures for noise cancelling, hour counts for battery life, codec abbreviations that hardly anyone can place. From daily selling, we know which of these figures actually say something about real-world usability — and which are mostly there to look good.

Active noise cancelling: not just marketing, but not magic either

ANC works most reliably on low, steady frequencies — jet engines, train rattle, air conditioning. On high, irregular noises like voices or clattering cutlery, the effect is significantly weaker, no matter what the spec sheet promises. If you mainly need ANC for commuting, almost any model will do; if you sit in a loud office, read real-world reviews instead of marketing numbers.

Battery life: why the manufacturer’s figure is rarely accurate

Manufacturer battery life figures are almost always measured at 50% volume and without ANC. With active noise cancelling and everyday volume, real-world runtime often drops by 20–30%. An advertised 8-hour battery life often means closer to 6 in practice.

Codec & sound quality: SBC, AAC, and aptX briefly explained

  • SBC is the baseline codec every Bluetooth device supports — solid, but not lossless.
  • AAC sounds noticeably better than SBC on iPhones; the difference is smaller on Android devices.
  • aptX reduces latency and improves sound quality on supported Android devices, but isn’t used by iPhones at all.

For videos and calls, the difference is minor in practice. For music enjoyment on an aptX-capable Android phone, it’s worth checking the codec spec.

Our recommendations

From our current lineup, these two models suit different needs: an over-ear model with noticeably effective ANC for commuters, and a lightweight in-ear model for uncomplicated everyday use.
